tools for our future education

Apparently 65% of students will be working in future jobs or careers which currently don't exist. It is hypothesised that these careers will come through new technological developments and new media possibilities, an area being termed trans-media. Perhaps the simplest example is using an app to scan an article to release further content, together these different media elements create something new.

This area of trans-media could quite possibly be the cutting edge of these new careers, jobs to design and create new user experiences harnessing the functionality of current mobile devices. But I am not meaning just coding or virtual reality, an area which is definitely seeing growth (after 20 years or more of development) mixed realities (MR) experiences which we are already witnessing are more likely to be the true face of our future here. But who in the future will be designing new GPS responsive content, or using near field communicators (the contactless bit in your card or phone) to trigger content, and are we properly providing an education to arm them with the skills to enable this?

The issue here is that we need to develop a new teaching curriculum and skill base to embrace these changes and educate our pupils to harness them. I am not advocating teaching more coding here, as that is but a tiny (but practical) segment of the picture, I am talking about training and developing new skills required to create new narratives and experiences which are outside the gaming space as we traditionally know it. The new frontier is in new forms of literature and storytelling spaces, perhaps for advertising or recreation, hybrids of the technical capabilities of devices combined. These are the new forms of art and culture, a mix of hi and low tech, on the street, in the countryside, on are walks in museums and galleries, creating life experiences which are dynamic, changing, evolving and responsive.

Why the contribution is important

 

The essentiality of this development in education requires a paradigm shift away from traditional education to engage with these new areas with fresh ideas and possibilities. We need to rip up the current educational frame work and begin to provide the tools these pupils need for the 2020 - 2030 workplace. Who is at the vanguard of this? and how long will we remain in the cul-de-sac of punishing pupils for poor spelling and grammar and not embracing their true potential for creativity.

Yes, it is not for every pupil, and the fundamental grounding of learning to read, write and count, should not displaced but more embraced within the new techniques. But with 65% of todays students inventing, designing and discovering their own jobs, I think we have no choice but to embrace the possibilities of trans-media and ambient literature. We need to integrate these areas fundamentally within our education and not as an add on, for these are the new forms of culture, the future authors of worth, there needs to be a concerted effort to redirect education across the spectrum to both acknowledge and embrace these fundamental changes to nurture and then harvest these fruits. There is enormous potential here and funding into new areas to begin to tap this potential should be a priority.
